I just learned who will be playing the villain in the next James Bond film: Javier Bardem. Yes, the really good-looking Spaniard from Eat, Pray, Love. Here’s why this was probably the BEST move the Bond film creators could have made at this point, after an inexplicably poor showing for the previous film, Quantum of Solace. (Inexplicable in that I, for one, really liked it. I loved the Russian girl and the storyline. And how Bond was so wonderfully and undeniably Bond.)
Number One: The guy has an accent. The best Bond villains always have an accent that is not British, Welsh, or Scotch. Goldfinger (Goldfinger). The Man With the Golden Gun (Scaramanga). Live and Let Die (Kananga). And let’s not forget Ernst Blofeld, who appeared in several films. All of them powerful, clever, and not from the UK.
Number Two: Javier Bardem is an Oscar winner (No Country for Old Men). Not that an Oscar automatically makes someone a good villain, but it helps. It means they can play different types of characters, and that type of depth is essential to make a Bond villain truly memorable.
Number Three: He can do scary. Remember No Country for Old Men? Psychotic, but in such a calm, almost blase way that you almost had no idea he might be moments away from putting a hole in your head.
But the real, and most important, reason Bardem will make a great Bond villain is that he has the ability to make you almost root for him for how deliciously evil he can be. Sort of like Heath Ledger’s Joker, evil, psycho, but hilariously and unbelievably dastardly. (Enough adverbs for you? 😉
